Artist Statement

Rock balancing is a transformational creative experience that encourages the evolution of human consciousness.  We create sculptures of delicately balanced boulders that appear weightless, and colossal structures that use gravity as their only mortar.  We share the healing benefits of this art through performances, workshops, and installation of cairns.

Our art juxtaposes the ephemeral and the eternal; addresses the subtle and the gross levels of balance.  The forms are simple, graceful, and archetypal.  The process of their creation transforms them from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

Our performance sculptures are created by balancing unaltered oblong rocks on there pointed ends on top of each other in ways that seem impossible.  These are temporary works of art that last only until a gust of wind or slight touch topples them, reminding us to be grateful for every moment.  In order to perceive the almost imperceptible “click” of balance our minds must be free of their 50,000 plus thoughts a day, allowing us to tap into our unused potential.

We also create massive rock cairns that stand for generations; they take on the form of eggs, spheres, cones, and arches.  Cairns are defined as stacks of rocks that show the way.  These cairns are a metaphor to mark our own internal evolution mirroring the evolution of the world around us.  As we lock each layer into place we create a base from which the cairns grow along with our own awareness.

As people observe the meditative space that allows us to bring river rocks alive they are inspired to seek out there own respite from the incessant chatter of the mind.   This art demonstrates that if we employ the tools of patience and focus we can accomplish things we never dreamed possible.
